The crime is life, the sentence is...

Judge Death,2000AD,Graeme Neil Reid,Sci-fi,Painting,Comic

Most UK comic book readers will know who this is but for those who don't its the arch-nemesis super villain of Judges Anderson and Dredd from the weekly comic 2000AD who goes by the catchy name of Judge Death. He's like a zombie version of the title character Judge Dredd thought up and drawn twenty years before the US comic market went crazy for zombie comics of their own popular characters. It's not a new idea by any stretch of the imagination but it is a popular one.

Again, this is a painted version of a previous pencil sketch I produced and was painted purely in acrylics this time on an A3 sheet of paper. Good fun slapping paint down on this one and I think I managed to get some good detail in without feeling the need to go too fiddly and minute. I'm still on the hunt for some reasonably priced paint brushes though as my trip to the art shop brought on phrases like "Holy Cow, look at the price of that!", when did paint brushes become so dear? And as a true Scotsman my kilt purse stayed tightly closed.

  1. Graeme, this is really cool. You certainly captured Judge Death well (including the spirited tail) Nice to see real painting too. Any chance we can see the remaining Judges sometime in the future? Fear is my favourite.

  2. The really tight palette does it for me!

Re: Brushes - I bought some really expensive sable brushes about 10 years back. I don't do much trad painting, but they are still in good shape, which makes me think they were worth the money. Then again I know plenty of commercial trad painters who burn through brushes, and swear by cheap ones.

  3. Thanks guys!

I'm going to be doing a painting soon that has a lot of fire and explosions in it so maybe a Judge Fire practice painting would be a good warm up (no pun intended). But in general, yeah, the other Dark Judges shall be added to my list :)

Re: Brushes - I've been buying up the cheap packets of brushes you can find in places like WHSmiths and craft places. You get about four brushes for about £10, most are rubbish but can still be of use. I'm like you Jon, I still have a lot of old brushes which if the price of them now was better I would replace but I'm coaxing a little more use out of them for the time being.

  4. This looks bloody great man. Interesting choice with the hand materializing from outside the panel then breaking that panel.

  5. Magic painting! Always liked Judge death, he a fun guy. This is spot on. Really like the touches of red coming through, did you underpaint first?

  6. Depending on how I want to work a painting, I'll put down a base colour and build onto that. Most times if its acrylic I'll work dark and build up to light so I'll put a base of dark brown or burnt reddish colours. No set pattern though, just what I think will work at the time.

  7. Looking at this piece again I can't understand why this isn't on an actual Judge Dredd album. There is no Justisssse!

  8. Thanks again guys. Gary your comment cheered me right up while I was trudging through an uninspiring design job, moral boost to the max :)
