August Competition – 'Dragon Rein' by Jon Hodgson

We have a new competition for all followers of our humble site, each month there will be a fantastic prize supplied by one of our contributors which you'll get a chance to win. It couldn't be easier to enter, all you need to do is leave a comment about the prize and you'll be entered into the running. Any kind of comment counts but you have to make sure you think about it as you can only enter once, so make it funny, make it complimentary, make it a song, make it weird, make it anything you want but make your comment count.

To start us off Jon is supplying something very special and I'll let him tell us a bit more, take it away Jon!

This is a 60 cm x 30 cm print on really heavy, glossy poster stock. It features artwork which was used on the cover of "Dragon Rein" by David F Berens. An ancient and evil sorcer-king surveys the lands under his thrall beside his equally ancient, though considerably less evil, dragon mount. The print is a crop of the full painting, which was considerably wider to wrap around the novel cover front and back. It was made in Painter and Photoshop last year, and I think for me it was something of a milestone in adding details, and generally producing tighter work than what had gone before. I have one of these very prints hanging in my toilet. So far there are only 5 of these in existence, and the prize is signed and numbered print two of an open edition. It's not a strictly limited run as such, but there aren't many about, and never will be!

Terms of entry: 1. Only one entry per person. 2. Comments must be left by the end of 31st August 2009 to be entered into the competition. 3. The winner will be announced on the website as soon as a decision has been reached. 5. If the winner does not have a contact email address available on their comment profile then it is the winners responsibility to contact Scotch Corner at scotchcorner@me.com and supply mailing address details. 6. If the winner does not contact us after one full month a new winner will be chosen. 7. All decisions are final. 8. If you are unhappy with any of these conditions please do not enter.

  1. This is an excellent example of what can be achieved on a computer. I admire those who can paint on the computer screen, something I have yet to follow. What type of pad do you use? I bought one a few years back, but I have problems with it. Which ones are the best to purchase? I love the way you seem to have created a watercolour effect for the background and the Dragon and figure seem to look like acrylics/ gouache were used. Which pad did you use to create this? Excellent sense of depth in this painting. Looking forward to seeing some more. adgros@hotmail.com

  2. Being a comic fan and gamer for the past erm 20+ years there are few things in life that I like more than an image of a dragon.
Now that I own a games/comic shop in Kirkcaldy I'm very keen to display works of art from both fields. I'm shamelessly entering this comment to try and get the piece for the walls in the shop where I'm hoping to display art from all the various comic/game artists I can get to come along to the shop for signings.
This specific dragon reminds me a lot of the work that Jeff Easley did for Dungeons & Dragons books in the 90s with a hint of the great Larry Elmore also.
    Great work Jon.

    Cheers,

    David

  3. Pity I'm so terrible at contests. And English.

For some time I've been thinking about hanging something on my wall. I never hung any posters or prints, even when I was a kid - I liked the white walls better.

When this piece got posted on DeviantArt, I was just starting to notice Jon's art and realize this Jon Hodgson person is probably quite awesome.

And I have to admit, that print looks pretty tasty. It'd be great if the first thing on my wall was this fine dragon.

  4. So far so serious.... I should win because, I'm who the dude with the dragon is looking for. Been locked up in that tower over on the hill for and age, freezing my cute arse off. There's a concealment spell on the door of the room I'm locked in which will only get to be a problem if he manages to get here.... the silly sod is still looking in the wrong direction... It may be a long wait....sigh!

  5. You know, I have been in Ukraine for two years teaching English to kids who don't understand how valuable the language is to them.

Some art like this, though...it might inspire them tto work a little harder.

  6. Finally! A piece of art suitable for the toilet. Now that empty wall in our newly re-modeled privy won't be so empty anymore. I need this print!........Which is indeed a beaut. I've always loved this one.

  7. Girl: " Tell me Dragon, why have you brought me here, is it because you sense the fates entwining our lives in a fierce battle yet to be?"

Dragon: "Nah, love, I thought you might like to see that silly boyfriend of yours down on the moor botherin' sheep again..."

  8. Love the sinewy texturing on the dragon! Very cool. I think I can promise I wouldn't hang this in my toilet!

  9. I love the 'Dragon's Reign' print! It reminds me so much of home back when I was a kid. The armoured, sinuey beast at my side, standing on the rocky outcropping, my mountain home in the distance, a volcano belching evil, foul smoke! Yeah, that takes me back! Except it was my cat with his bell at my side, it was the front lawn, the house was right beside me, and the mountain was just a big rock, but yeah, that captures my young life perfectly!

  12. Quite simply I like the "Dragon Reign." I like the image, the style and the sense of loneliness that comes with power regardless of how it used.

    Cheers

  13. Moody, sad, wistful, as if you'd been walking alone in the mountains, turned a corner on a steep ledge and were confronted the scene. I think it's lovely!

  16. As the thunder rolled in the far distance, they surveyed their armies of orcs, trolls and golems below them. They were prepared to over-throw their King, north west of the mountains. The dragon whispered “Do you understand, once we battle the King and his battalions, you cannot return to your land and your kin?”
The gray haired leader sighed wearily. “Yes”.

  17. I would most likely hang this right above my liverpool scarf in my dorm room. Gotta love the artwork though. I collect the most eclectic things possible so when some broad wakes up next to me after a night of partying she freaks the hell out. This would definitely be a great touch.

  18. And 3 years later the author comes out of recluse to say, thank you Jon for the incredible painting you created for my humble work of Dragons and magic! It has helped prove that sometimes you can judge a book by its cover!
    Cheers and thanks!
